Processing that benefits

In order to reliably slow down your career and professional growth, it is enough to constantly perform only what you know thoroughly. Day after day, for months, and then for years. Probably, the work will be done impeccably, but it will not make you think, try and develop.

One of my acquaintances, let's call her Nadia, complained that the chef constantly asks to do an order of magnitude more than her specialty suggests. She checked each of his tasks with the job description and understood that this went beyond not only her duties, but also her knowledge. Another would have opposed, and this turned out to be a trouble-free employee. She filled up the lack of knowledge at night, so that in the afternoon she would begin to carry out new tasks, which, alas, no one paid for her. Nadia suffered very much, but took on new and new projects.

This went on for more than a year, when suddenly at their enterprise a competition was announced for the vacant position of the head of the neighboring department. After reviewing the responsibilities, Nadia realized that thanks to overtime work, she was almost a trained specialist. Nadia could not miss her chance! Therefore, she collected the necessary documents and filed an application, soon passed the exam and left her home department.

She says that the chef, parting with her, literally sobbed! Still, it is not known whether he will again come across such a meek employee. But Nadia is not angry with him because of sleepless nights and underestimated work. She gained experience that has transformed into financial and career growth.

Such cases are not unique, and, on the contrary, if you have to do the same work every day, the routine corrodes the enthusiasm and desire to change something. People who do not feed their brain with something new and are constantly in their comfort zone very quickly lose their desire to change the world, for the better, including.

Ideally, if the work in proportion represents such a mix:

    20% - a completely new activity;
    40% - work that has already been encountered;
    40% - what is thoroughly familiar.

Of course, there are situations that can be called “Whoever is lucky, they carry it”, when all the “tails” are dumped on the employee’s shoulders for years, and they don’t even thank for overtime work. Then the question becomes either about the realization of the potential of the employee, or about the sanity of the employer. It is impossible to deal with inadequate leadership for a long time, it is harmful to the psyche and further career. Also, one should not avoid applying one's own knowledge, especially acquired in practice. Show off your knowledge! Modesty in this case is the shortest path to the unknown.

Always strive to learn and do more than is due. You do this for yourself, not for the boss.
